The use of antihypertensive drugs has an impact on reducing the salivary flow rate. A decrease in salivary flow rate and salivary pH will cause discomfort in the oral cavity, pain, increased dental caries, and increased development of microorganisms in the oral cavity such as bacteria and candida. This study aims to determine the relationship between salivary flow rate and pH to the number of candida colonies in the oral cavity of patients using antihypertensive drugs. This research is an analytic study with a cross sectional approach. The samples in this study were outpatients who used anti-hypertensive drugs at the Internal Medicine Polyclinic of the Hypertension Kidney Sub-Specialty of Dr. Pirngadi Medan Hospital with a total sample of 60 people. Saliva was collected by the spitting method then the pH of the saliva was measured with a digital Eutech pH meter. Then saliva was inoculated and the results of fungal culture were counted using a colony counter. Data analysis was performed with the chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of samples were aged 50-59 years and the majority were female. The relationship between salivary flow rate and the number of candida colonies showed a significant relationship with a value of p=0.000 (p<0.0.5), where the number of candida colonies was higher in subjects who had a lower salivary flow rate. The relationship between pH and the number of candida colonies shows a significant relationship with a value of p = 0.000 (p <0.0.5), where subjects with an acidic pH have more candida colonies. The conclusion in this study is that there is a significant relationship between salivary flow rate and salivary pH on the number of candida colonies in the oral cavity of patients using antihypertensive drugs.en_US
